What is the state tree of Texas?

The state tree of Texas is the pecan tree. Pecan trees have a long lifespan, surviving for more than 1,000 years. The tree can grow to more than 100 feet tall.

The pecan tree existed in Texas before humans arrived in the area. American Indians used pecans as food, combining the nuts with beans, corn and squash. Tribes used roasted pecans during long travels as a long-lasting source of nourishment.

Pecan wood is useful for making hammer handles, wall paneling, furniture, baseball bats and carvings. The pecan tree was declared the official state tree in 1919. Pecan pie is also the official state pie of Texas.
