Alaska and Michigan are the states with the most lakes. Alaska is home to more than 3 million lakes that measure five acres or greater. More than 40 percent of the United States’ surface water resources lie in Alaska.
Michigan has 46,199 lakes with a total acreage of 890,370. This includes 35,440 lakes less than five acres in size and 95 lakes greater than 1,000 acres in size.
Minnesota, dubbed “Land of 10,000 Lakes,†is home to 11,842 lakes measuring 10 or more acres each. It also has 6,564 natural rivers and streams. Red Lake is Minnesota’s largest lake and measures 288,800 acres. Its deepest lake is Lake Saganaga in Cook County, which measures 240 feet deep.
