Adderall, the brand name for a formulation of amphetamine salts, is an addictive prescription stimulant. In 2012, more than 16 million prescriptions for stimulants were dispensed in the United States, and over 116,000 patients were admitted to rehab facilities for addiction to amphetamines, according to AddictionCenter.com.
Amphetamine addiction tends to be most prevalent among young adults and students. College students are twice as likely to abuse amphetamines compared to peers who are not attending a university, as reported by Health Care Communication News. Between 30 and 40 percent of college undergraduates reported abusing prescription stimulants during strenuous times such as exam weeks.
