STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. As of 2014, these are the fields that are expected to produce a high number of future jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
In order to stay competitive in the global economy, STEM jobs are necessary. However, there are not a lot of college students pursuing these degrees as of 2014. Despite the predicted job openings, a shortage is anticipated. A growing push in education is designed to encourage students to develop an interest in STEM fields to help the United States stay competitive in the world and to be a leader in high-tech fields.
