Stephen F Austin was arrested and imprisoned by Mexicans in 1833 for treason. He was an American empressario often referred to as the "Father of Texas" for leading the colonization of the region in the nineteenth century.
The reason behind Austin's arrest lay in a letter he wrote in October 1833 to the Municipality of Bexar, recommending that all the Texas municipalities should unite as a single state. The Mexicans intercepted the letter and considered it a treasonable matter. They arrested Austin at Saltillo, and imprisoned him in for 8 months. He was released in August 1834, and he proceeded to lead the Texan rebels to victory over Mexico.
