In California and Illinois, a person must take a hunter education course and pay a fee to obtain a hunting license. The exact process for obtaining a hunting license depends on the area.
Completion of a hunter education course is a common prerequisite for a hunting license, although certain states don't have this requirement. In certain states that do, evidence of a previous hunting license in another area may waive that requirement.
Game eligible for hunting depends on the state and the license. For example, a basic hunting license in Utah allows a person to hunt small game. The state also offers a combination license, which allows hunting and fishing. The license doesn't allow a person to hunt larger species, such as bears, Rocky Mountain goats, elk, deer or sharp-tailed grouse. After acquiring a basic hunting license, the person can apply for a permit to hunt larger species.
Most hunting licenses remain valid for a year. Depending on the state, the year may start from the date of issue or a specific calendar date. For example, in California, the license period runs from July 1 to June 30, regardless of the date of issue. Some states allow people to purchase lifetime hunting licenses.
