A stomach feeding tube is a tube that is inserted into the stomach through an incision in the abdominal wall to facilitate direct passage of food into the gastrointestinal tract, states WebMD. Doctors insert this tube through a procedure known as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, which takes 30 to 45 minutes.
The stomach feeding tube is useful for patients who experience serious swallowing difficulties and those who are unable to feed sufficiently through the mouth, according to WebMD. To insert this tube the doctor makes a small opening in the abdominal wall and runs the tube into the stomach via the opening.
