Stop leg cramps from occurring by strengthening leg muscles, drinking plenty of fluids and consuming lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, recommends Jessica Firger for Everyday Health. Increasing magnesium intake can also decrease the frequency of leg cramps.
Physical therapist Matthew Hyland advises stretching and exercising leg muscles regularly to minimize the chance that leg cramps occur; however, avoid overly vigorous exercise that can bring on leg cramps. Firger notes that cramps often occur due to dehydration, so remaining hydrated is key to preventing leg cramps. Studies have shown that consuming at least 300 milligrams of magnesium per day decreases the frequency of nighttime leg cramps. Nuts, lentils and quinoa are good sources of this mineral.
