Malic acid is not a very strong acid. It is found in all living things and imparts a pleasing sourness to grapes, green apples, rhubarbs and sour candy. It gets its name because it was first isolated from apple juice, and malum is Latin for "apple."

Malic acid is also produced synthetically and changes into lactic acid during fermentation. Lactic acid is an even milder acid than malic acid.

Malic acid's chemical formula is C4H6O5, which means its made up of four atoms of carbon, six atoms of hydrogen and five atoms of oxygen in a chain. Its density is 1.609 grams per cubic centimeter and its melting point is 266 degrees Fahrenheit.
