What is student health insurance?

Student health insurance is a health insurance plan provided by schools for enrolled students, notes HealthCare.gov. The federal government does not provide a health care exemption for college students, but students with a plan through their school meet the coverage requirements.
Universities can offer student health insurance plans from private companies to enrolled students, states the United Healthcare and Aetna websites. If a university does not offer health care, or if the students choose not to use this coverage, students can purchase coverage through the Marketplace, states HealthCare.gov. Access to coverage varies, so students should check with their schools to determine if they have access to a student health insurance plan.
