Sucanat is the brand name of a whole, unrefined cane sugar that Pronatec first introduced in 1978. The name "Sucanat" is an abbreviation of "SUgar CAne NATural."

Wholesome, the company that produces the original Sucanat, claims it is the least refined sugar available outside of a cane stalk. The company makes Sucanat by crushing freshly cut sugar cane, extracting the juice, and then heating the juice until it reduces to a rich, dark syrup. The sugary syrup undergoes hand-paddling until it cools and dries, creating Sucanat granules. Unlike most processed sugars, Sucanat is brown, as it still contains the natural molasses of the sugar cane. The sugar cane that the company uses to produce Sucanat is 100 percent certified organic and comes from Costa Rica.
