"The Cay" is a book about a boy named Phillip who struggles to overcome the frustrations of his blindness. Phillip is put into a new environment on a deserted island and feels as if he has no control over his situation.
In the story by author Theodore Taylor, Phillip is marooned with a black man named Timothy, and is automatically prejudiced against him because of his color. He learns to overcome this, however, as Timothy helps him learn to overcome basic obstacles and teaches him to respect nature. Phillip eventually realizes that Timothy's wisdom and kindness is much more significant than his skin color. He even honors Timothy after he passes away.
