The Edict of Milan was a proclamation based on the agreement made in Milan in February 313 A.D. by the Roman emperors Constantine I and Licinius, which granted Christians legal right to organize, freedom to worship any deity and return of all confiscated property. The Edict of Milan established toleration and kind treatment of Christians in the Roman Empire.

Other edicts of toleration were passed before the Edict of Milan, but none were upheld. One such edict was passed by emperor Galerius, who granted indulgence to Christians who failed to obey the institutes of antiquity or Roman law and religion.
