How do you supplement with formula?

Supplementing an infant's diet with formula is a slow process. Lactation consultants recommend waiting until the baby is at least 3-5 weeks old before introducing a bottle. Then start by replacing one nursing a day for several days, then replace a second nursing in a few more days.
Keep in mind that it's common for infants to initially refuse formula or bottles. Oftentimes, offering a bottle of expressed breast milk helps make the transition to a bottle easier. When supplementing with formula, make it easier on the baby by leaving the room while the baby is being fed. Instruct the person feeding the baby to maintain close contact, similar to when the baby is being nursed.
