Orbit gum is sweetened using a mixture of alcohol sweeteners including aspartame, sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol. Orbit gum contains less than 2 percent of non-nutrative sweeteners, which include acesulfame K and sucralose.
Sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol are commonly used in a variety of sugar-free food products. Sorbitol provides sweetness with many fewer calories than regular sugar. Sorbitol is considered to be 60 percent as sweet as sugar and contains 2.6 calories per gram.
Chewing sugar-free gum benefits oral health by promoting an increase of saliva, which helps to flush bacteria and reduce the development of dental cavities.
