People who are gluten intolerant experience symptoms of celiac disease that include abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloating after eating foods with gluten, explains WebMD. Some patients may experience an upset stomach, fatigue and headaches when exposed to gluten.
Patients diagnosed with celiac disease have difficulty absorbing nutrients when eating gluten because the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged due to inflammation, according to WebMD. As a result, the exposure to gluten can lead to weight loss and malnutrition. Patients who do not have celiac disease can be gluten intolerant, yet many experience some of the same symptoms of celiac disease.
