The first symptoms of human rabies include fever, general discomfort, weakness and headache, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Severe symptoms include insomnia, delirium, cerebral anxiety, hallucinations and abnormal behavior.
An itching, painful or prickling sensation may appear at the location of the bite in the first stages of human rabies, explains the CDC. The discomfort of the beginning stages soon progresses into anxiety, agitation and confusion before reaching severe stages. The severe stage of rabies usually lasts from two to 10 days. Once symptoms of rabies appear, the disease is typically fatal. Death is prevented with a human immune globulin injection and rabies vaccine.
