Symptoms of a ruptured eardrum include pain in the affected ear followed by a watery, pus-filled or bloody drainage, temporary hearing loss, and ringing in the ear, according to Healthline. A severely ruptured eardrum may also cause weakness in facial muscles and lightheadedness.
A ruptured eardrum is a perforation in the eardrum or tympanic membrane due to an infection, ear pressure changes, injury or trauma, explains Healthline. Nonsurgical treatments for the condition include warm compresses, pain relievers, medicated paper patches and antibiotics. Another option is tympanoplasty, a surgical procedure through which doctors repair the tear using a tissue patch grafted from another part of the body.
