What is a system idle process?

A system idle process is a simple, repetitive process that a computer runs when nothing else requires processing power, often in order to maintain heat energy efficiency. The system idle process came about when computer processes needed tasks to compute in order to burn off excess heat, avoiding overheating.
When the system idle process appears to take over the majority of a computer's processing power, it is because no other applications or operating system tasks need computing. The system idle process cedes priority to any other tasks initiated by the user or the computer, and will disappear when a user starts operating the computer.
