Chordoma, a rare bone cancer, can cause tailbone pain, according to the Chordoma Foundation. Chordoma is a malignant form of cancer that affects the bones of the spine and skull. Tumors form most commonly at the base of the spine, on the tailbone and at the base of the skull.

Chordoma develops spontaneously from embryonic cells originally destined to become cartilage. These cells remain in the spine and skull after birth, where they sometimes mutate into the malignant cancer, according to the Chordoma Foundation. About 29 percent of patients with chordomas have tumors affecting the tailbone. Chordoma can affect people of all ages, but the median age for people with tailbone chordomas is 69.
