According to Minerals.net, talc – the softest mineral on earth – is found worldwide. In the United States, important talc deposits are present in Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina and Montana.
Talc is number 1 on the Mohs hardness scale and can be easily scratched with a fingernail. The mineral in its powdered form is associated with some health concerns, including a rare breathing disorder.
"Although solid forms of talc are assumed to be safe, and most concerns are only after prolonged exposure, it is advisable to wash hands after handling talc," Minerals.net states. In its mineral form, talc "has a greasy feel" and may be "lightly fluorescent."
