The south-central Alaska peak of Mount McKinley rises 20,320 feet above sea level. It is the tallest mountain on the North American continent and one of the highest in the world.

Part of the Alaska Range, McKinley rests within Denali National Park, which covers more than 6 million acres of land. It was first named by a gold prospector in 1896 in support for presidential candidate William McKinley, though the name has since been changed to Denali, meaning 'High One.'

The first ascent of the summit occurred on June 7, 1913. About 1,275 enthusiasts attempt to climb the mountain each year with only half succeeding in the two to four week journey.
