Mount Whitney is 14,505 feet tall. The mountain, which is part of the California Sierra Nevada range, is the highest point in California and also the highest point in the continental United States.
Because it is the tallest point in the continental U.S., Mount Whitney attracts a large amount of hikers. This has caused the National Park Service to implement a permit system for climbing the mountain.
The most direct route to Mount Whitney is a 10.7-mile (17.1 km) trail from Whitney Portal, which is 13 miles (21 km) west of Lone Pine, a town east of the Sierra range.
