Mount Paricutin, one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, sits 9,186 feet above sea level and about 1,353 feet above valley level. It is located in the Mexican state of Michoacan near the city of Uruapan.
Mount Paricutin erupted in 1943, claiming the lives of three people and forcing hundreds to relocate to nearby towns. The event brought geologists from all over the world, as it was the first time modern science was able to fully document a volcano's entire life cycle. The volcano is part of the Pico de Tancitaro National Park and has become a tourist attraction. The town offers guided tours up the dormant volcano, either on foot or on horseback.
