The tallest mountain in the United States is Alaska's Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet. Alaska claims 11 of the tallest peaks in the United States. Located in the Alaska ranges of the Saint Elias mountains and the Wrangell mountains, seven of these peaks are above 15,000 feet.

Ranking 12 after the Alaska peaks, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States is Mount Whitney in California's Sierra Nevada range, at 14,505 feet. Colorado's Mount Elbert, at 14,440 feet, is the second-tallest peak in the contiguous United States. Five peaks in Colorado above 14,000 feet rank in the top 20 tallest in the United States. Mount Rainer in the Cascade Range in Washington is ranked 17th, at 14,417 feet.
