Where do tapirs live?

Tapirs live in southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Sumatra, and also in the grasslands and forests of Central and South America. The mountain tapir lives in the Andes Mountains of South America.

There are four species of tapirs, according to National Geographic, all of which are endangered or threatened due to hunting in their native habitats. The largest tapir is the Malay tapir, a black and white animal that grows to 800 pounds and lives in the forests and swamps of Malaysia. The smallest tapir is the mountain, or woolly, tapir living in the Andes Mountains. Tapirs love to swim and to wallow in mud, and they create pathways through dense undergrowth as they search for food.
