According to Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome include burning or tingling of the soles of the feet and pain that travels along the foot nerve when the area is touched. Tarsal tunnel symptoms tend to be exacerbated by physical activity.
John Hopkins Medicine explains that tarsal tunnel syndrome can be caused by injury, arthritis or genetics. Individuals with fallen arches or naturally flat feet are also at risk for developing the condition. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve in the foot becomes compressed and is diagnosed through physical examinations, X-rays and electronic testing. Treatments for the condition include steroid injections, anti-inflammatory medications, foot braces and orthotic foot devices.
