The penalty for not maintaining health coverage varies each year, as indicated on HealthCare.gov. Individuals who do not have health care coverage in 2015 must pay the higher of 2 percent of the household's yearly income above the tax filing threshold, or a flat fee per person.

In 2015, the flat rate per person over the age of 18 is $325, and the figure for individuals under the age of 18 is $162.50 per person, explains Healthcare.gov. The maximum penalty is $975 for a family using this method.

Individuals without health care coverage in 2014 were penalized by having to pay the higher of the following: 1 percent of the household income above the tax filing threshold, or $95 per person over 18, and $47.50 per person under 18 years old, notes Healthcare.gov. The per-family maximum penalty for 2014 was $285.
