Teacher Loan Forgiveness is a program designed to encourage and motivate individuals to enter and continue in the teaching profession, notes Student Debt Relief. Eligible teachers qualify for a reduction of $5,000 to $17,500 on loans plus a full forgiveness after a 10-year term.
The federal student loans of a person must originate after Oct. 1, 1998. An individual must not have a pending balance on direct loans or a federal family education loan as of Oct. 1, 1998, notes Federal Student Aid. The individual must have been a full-time teacher for five consecutive years to qualify. The federal laws define a teacher as a person who provides direct classroom teaching.
