What is TEE cardioversion?

TEE, or transesophageal echocardiogram, is an imaging test that makes sure the heart does not have any blood clots, according to WebMD. This test is done before cardioversion treatment to correct heart arrhythmias.

During the transesophageal echocardiogram, the patient swallows a thin tube that has a camera on the tip. According to WebMD, the camera is positioned against the back wall of the heart. Once it is determined the heart is free of blood clots, cardioversion is performed in which the heart receives one or more electrical shocks in an attempt to put it back into a normal rhythm. Recovery from both procedures takes several hours.
