A 2014 study by Common Sense Media reports that teenagers read for enjoyment far less than they used to. In addition, literacy and reading achievement levels have stagnated for older teens. As of 2014, only 17 percent of 17-year-olds read every day, as compared to 53 percent of 9-year-olds.

Over the past 30 years, the proportion of teens who say they "hardly ever" or "never" read has tripled. 45 percent of 17-year-olds report reading for enjoyment only one or two times per year. In addition, while the reading scores of 13-year-olds have improved during those 30 years, the scores of 17-year-olds have not changed. Teenage girls read 10 minutes more per day than boys and rate as more proficient at reading.
