What is a telescope goldfish?

A telescope goldfish is an egg-shaped goldfish that is so called because of its large eyes on top of telescope-like stems, which can measure up to 3/4 inch in length, attached to the sides of its head. Its eyes start to protrude when it is around 6 months old.

Telescope goldfish originated in China and were referred to as dragon eye goldfish or dragonfish. This breed of goldfish is called "demekin" in Japan. The telescope goldfish has a short and broad body, an expansive head and a slightly branched caudal fin. Its bulging eyes can be dome-shaped, flat or globe-formed.
