Distinguish a male raccoon from a female by observing their size in relation to one another and their social behaviors. Males are 10 to 30 percent larger than females. The male Cozumel raccoon is further distinguished from the female by a large tuft of orange fur around its neck.
A raccoon seen amidst of a group of juveniles is always a female as female raccoons rear the young exclusively. Female raccoons give birth in early summer to an average of one to seven kits. Raccoons average between 4 and 23 pounds in weight and live for two to three years in the wild.
