Of the several color variations in a Chilean rose hair tarantula, the most vibrant red or copper form is always a male. Females have much longer life spans than males, with males living about five years and females living as much as 20. And, the male is generally smaller.
The scientific name for the species is Grammostola rosea. Their native habitat is from the Atacama Desert in northern Chile to as far south as Santiago. Living in one of the harshest climates on Earth, the tarantula's main water source comes from the food it eats and the little water available in the fog that drifts over the region.
