Temple University was established in 1888. In 1884, Russell Conwell, a Philadelphia minister, began tutoring working class people who wanted to better themselves. As the classes began to grow, he recruited volunteer staff and received a charter of incorporation for "The Temple College" in 1888.
Conwell's vision in Temple University was to provide an education for people no matter where they came from, understanding that talent and motivation were all they needed to be given an opportunity to learn. Although established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Temple University has grown to nine campuses, with 17 different schools and colleges, serving nearly 40,000 students around the globe as of 2015.
