Where do termites come from?

Termites evolve from egg to nymph to adult through simple metamorphosis. Colonies are established in dark, damp areas receiving little exposure to air near a source of moisture.
In temperate regions, termites are often found in dead logs, in tree stumps in the soil and in dry-wood structures near established nests. Those living in tropical regions exist among both dead and living vegetation where there are cellulose-rich food sources.
While thermatis are native to every state except Alaska, they thrive in warmer climates. The most structural-damaging termite species found in the United States belong to one of three groups: subterranean, dampwood or drywood.
