As of 2014, the biggest New Year celebration in the world is held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On New Year's Eve, about 2 million residents gather on Copacabana Beach to celebrate.

The giant party in Rio is called Reveillon. Traditionally, attendees wear all white. The celebration is meant to honor Iemanja, a goddess recognized in some Afro-American societies as a representation of the ocean.

According to the Travel Channel, wearing black clothing is inadvisable during Reveillon because it's considered taboo. Attendees do wear green, red, yellow and gold garments over their white clothes to symbolize good health, romance and prosperity, respectively.
