The earth's core is divided into two layers: the outer and inner core. The outer core borders the Earth's mantle and is approximately 1,430 miles in thickness. The inner core has a thickness of 750 miles, giving the core a combined thickness of 2180 miles.
The outer core is composed mostly of nickel and iron and has a temperature between 7,200 to 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The inner core, on the other hand, is composed mostly of iron and has a temperature range between 9,000 and 13,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The inner core is mostly solid due to the pressure placed on it by the rest of the Earth.
