According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are five food groups: vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and proteins such as meat, poultry, nuts and fish. These food groups are the basis for a healthy diet for the average American.
Fruits and vegetables can be bought fresh, canned, dried or frozen. Recommended whole grains include oatmeal, crackers and brown rice. Refined grains include white bread, white rice, tortillas and most noodles. The CDC recommends low-fat or fat-free dairy products. The CDC also recommends eating lean meats and poultry, unsalted nuts and at least 8 ounces of seafood per week from the protein group.
