In 1875, Churchill Downs was built and was home to the very first Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky. This race is often referred to as the "Run for the Roses" and it is one of the most recognized horse races in the world. The Preakness began in 1873 at the Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland.
