What is a TIA stroke?

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a condition that occurs when blood stops flowing to a part of the brain. It is commonly referred to as a mini-stroke as it mimics the symptoms of stroke.

The condition usually lasts several minutes and is not known to cause any permanent complications, according to Mayo Clinic. Some symptoms include dizziness, double vision or blindness, weakness and slurred speech. Treatment involves using medication that prevents blood clotting or undergoing a surgical operation.

Approximately one out of three people who experiences a TIA may eventually suffer from stroke. Fortunately, a TIA can be a good opportunity to help a person prevent suffering from a future stroke.
