When is the best time to prune a crepe myrtle tree?

A crepe myrtle tree should be pruned at the end of winter or the beginning of spring. These trees can be pruned again in summer, after the blooms fade.
Pruning a crepe myrtle early in the season encourages the plant to flourish in the spring. There is no need to remove seed heads at this time. Flowers only appear on new growth, and pruning the tree in summer stimulates it to bloom again. Trimming a crepe myrtle involves removing branches that are low growing or that cross each other, as well as trimming off any dead or damaged branches to allow for more sun and air to reach the inside of the tree.
