Lavender should be planted in the early spring when the soil is warming up. This occurs in April or May for most areas. The plant is fairly drought-tolerant once it has been established.

Lavender plants should be spaced 3 feet apart, unless the lavender is being grown as a hedge. In this case, the gardener should space the lavender plants from 1 foot to 18 inches apart. Lavender does well in poor or moderately fertile soil and should be planted in full sun. The plant prefers well-drained soil. Alternatively, lavender can be grown in large pots if the soil in the area is not well drained.
