What is time zone fallout?

Time zone fallout refers to political candidates being disadvantaged by news of rival successes broadcast from different time zones in the same country. An example of this was Reagan's 1980 victory on the East Coast being broadcast to the West Coast, discouraging some West Cost voters from voting.

As a term, time zone fallout may refer to the phenomenon of the time zone disadvantage effect or someone who has been a victim of it. Jimmy Carter was a victim of the phenomenon when Reagan's landslide East Coast victory was announced, and he conceded only an hour after the national broadcast was transmitted.
