Plant chrysanthemums in an area shielded from strong winds with well-drained soil and good sunlight. Apply abundant mulch in the fall to create a protective layer against winter freeze. Ensure good air circulation by allowing enough space between plants. Use a time-release fertilizer in the spring, and pinch new growths.

Pinching ensures fuller and healthier blooms in late summer and autumn, preventing premature blooming. Pinch back new growths above the second set of leaves, 4 to 6 inches from the stem. Pinch chrysanthemums until the end of June. Use the removed segments as cuttings to plant elsewhere in the garden.
