What is the FBI virus scam?

The FBI virus scam refers to a money extortion scheme where users whose computers are infected are forced to pay a lump sum of money to have their computers unblocked. The risk of infection increases the older the security software version is.
The FBI virus, which is also known as MoneyPak ransomware, is a type of malware that enters the system undetected and blocks crucial system functions. When a system is infected, the only way to remove the malware is to perform a system restoration in Windows' safe mode, or to install and run anti-malware software, such as STOPzilla or Malwarebytes.
