What are some tips for growing hardy banana trees?

To grow a healthy, hardy banana tree, plant it in a location with full to partial sun and a moist, yet well-drained soil composition. Since banana trees tend to reach heights of 12 to 18 feet, make sure to plant it in a spot with plenty of vertical space.
Even though a banana tree initially grows very quickly, it stops growing during the winter. Before the first frost of the fall, cut back the stems and leaves, leaving approximately 8 to 10 inches above the ground. Cover the remaining crown with heavy mulch. Alternatively, plant the tree in a large pot, and move it indoors to avoid the frost.
