Orchids do not grow in soil in the wild. For the roots to aerate properly, they require special media, such as sphagnum peat moss, cork, fir bark or a commercially available orchid mix. Because they like to breathe, the roots often climb out of the pot. Orchids also grow best with 50 to 70 percent humidity. Pots help to maintain the humidity around the roots.
