Fig trees do best in full sunlight and need plenty of room to grow. Fertile and well-draining soil is a requirement. They do not require frequent pruning, and a good time to do it is in the early winter just before growth begins, to avoid injuring the plant.

Fertilization should take place annually, using 1 pound of 8-8-8 per year of age or foot of height, up to a maximum of 12 pounds. The soil should not have too much nitrogen. During the winter, the trees need protection from cold wind or direct sunlight. Figs are ready for harvest when they become soft.
