What are some tips for transplanting rhubarb?

Gardening experts advise that early spring is the best time to transplant rhubarb. It is also possible to transplant rhubarb during the fall when the plants are dormant.
Rhubarb plants should be dug up in early spring for transplanting when early growth is beginning. This makes it easier to determine where to divide the root mass. The clumps should be cut apart with a spade, taking extra care not to damage the crowns. Each section to be transplanted must contain two or three buds, known as "eyes," and a good-sized piece of root. Individual rhubarb plants should be divided after five to six years; the best rhubarb comes from plants that are less than 10 years old.
